"WHY DO WE PRAY BEFORE EATING MEALS?”

Christians frequently pray before meals, giving thanks to God for the food we are about to eat. Pre-meal prayers can be a simple “thank-you” to God for the meal or lengthier prayers of thanksgiving for all of His provisions in our lives. In praying before meals, we are following the example of the Lord Jesus, whose prayers on several occasions are our model.

In the two instances where Jesus miraculously fed multitudes of people with a few loaves and fish, He “gave thanks” (
Matthew 14:19-21; 15:34-36). In the first instance, He fed 5000 men, plus women and children, with five loaves of bread and two fish. In the second, He fed over 4000 with seven loaves and a few fish. At the Last Supper, Jesus again set the example of thanksgiving. When He passed the cup and the bread to His disciples, telling them to eat and drink these elements which were symbols of His body and blood, He gave thanks. When He appeared to the two men on the road to Emmaus after His resurrection, He stopped briefly to eat with them, and “took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them.”   (Luke 24:30)

The apostle Paul continued this example of praying before eating, as recorded in Acts 27. In this instance, Paul was on a ship with 276 other people when a hurricane battered the ship. After fourteen days of not eating, Paul exhorted the sailors and other passengers to eat something in order to survive. He “took some bread and gave thanks to God in front of them all” (
Acts 27:35). Even in spite of the danger and terrible circumstances, Paul paused to give thanks to God before the meal.

When we thank God for providing our daily bread, we are acknowledging that all things come from Him (
Ephesians 5:20; Romans 11:36). He is the source of everything we have, and praying before meals as a habit helps to remind us of that truth. Praying before we eat with a thankful heart brings glory to God and centers our minds on His great love for His children and the blessings He bestows on those who belong to Him.

“Bless us, O Lord, and these Thy gifts which we are about to receive from Thy bounty, through Christ our Lord. Amen.”

Bless our food * we share with friends today.
Grant us peace and love along the way.

Bless, bless, bless this food, *
Bless all present here.
And help us now to spread your love
To people far and near.

I'd like to thank the Lord above
For giving me this land.
For apple trees and honey bees
The harvest and my home.
To Him I must give thanks today
For all the things to come.
For health and strength and happiness
Be thankful everyone.

5.  For Goodness (Tune:  She’ll be Coming Around the Mountain)

Let us all thank God for goodness at this meal, (at this meal)
Let us all thank God for goodness at this meal, (at this meal)
Let us all thank God for goodness,
Let us all thank God for goodness,
Let us all thank God for goodness at this meal.

For health and strength and daily bread we praise Thy name O Lord.

For the food we eat, we thank you,
For the friends we meet, kind and true.
For the fun we share, all day through,
Oh, Lord we thank You.

A little bit of breakfast on my plate,
A little bit of dinner, don't be late,
A little bit of gorp while we're on our hike,
A little bit of s'mores by firelight,
A little bit of brown bears on my stick,
A little bit of pudding, not too thick,
A little bit of ice cream in the can,
We thank you, Lord, and say Amen!

God Creator, God Creator,

We give thanks, we give thanks,

For our many blessings, for our many blessings,

We thank you, we thank you.

God has created a new day,

Silver and green and gold.

Live that the sunset may find us,

Worthy His gifts to hold.

God has created a new night,

Silver and dark and still,

Live that the morning may find us,

Ready to do His will.

God is great, God is good,
Now we're gonna thank him for our food.
We're gonna thank him morning, noon and night,
We're gonna thank him cause he's out of sight.
Amen
(Chi chi chi, chi chi chi, chi chi chi) Amen

God made the mountains,
God made the rolling hills,
God made the flowers,
God made the daffodils,
God made the field of wheat,
For all the bread we eat,
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. (Repeat and fade out.)

God our Father, God our Father.
Once again, once again,
Thank you for our blessings, thank you for our blessings.
A-amen, a-amen.

Lift up your hearts – Hearts and minds and voices all give thanks.

For this our food – Hearts and minds and voices all give thanks.

For this our drink – Hearts and minds and voices all give thanks.

For these our friends – Hearts and minds and voices all give thanks.

For this our camp – Hearts and minds and voices all give thanks.

We thank Thee Lord.

40 days with no food,

Then he wrote the golden rule and that’s OK

He’s got love on his face,

Full of grace!

He’s spreadin; his word all over the place!

Singin”, We will, we wi;;

Praise him, yeah, praise him WOO (2X)

The Lord is good to me,

And so I thank the Lord,

For giving me the things I need,

The sun and the rain and the apple seed,

The Lord is good to me.

And every seed that grows
Will grow into a tree,
And one day soon there'll be apples there,
For everyone in the world to share.
The Lord is good to me.

Guides come and join in a grace with me
Thanking God for all to see.
Praise Him, O Praise Him
In humility.

Let's join hands and give our thanks,
Give our thanks, give our thanks,
Let's join hands and give our thanks,
Give our thanks to God.

Lord, the giver of all good,
Thank You for our daily food,
May Guide friends and Guiding ways,
Help us to serve you all our days,
Lord, the giver of all good,
Thank You for our daily food.   Amen.

Bread and jam, bread and jam,
I am grateful, yes I am.
I thank God kindly for the food I eat,
Thank Him for this lovely treat.

Morning, evening, noon and night for all Thy gifts we thank Thee Lord.

Morning is here, the board is spread.

Thanks be to God, who gives us bread.

Noontime is here, the board is spread.

Thanks be to God, who gives us bread.

Evening is here, the board is spread.

Thanks be to God, who gives us bread.

23.  My God (Tune:  My Guy)

Before every meal - I show how I feel to my God,
There's nothing you can bet, that'll make me forget –

To thank- My God
I gave my Girl Guide word of Honour
To serve my God-and I'm gonna
So I'm tellin' it from the start
The praise comes from my heart to my God!!
What you say?
My God! Who? (Softer)
My God!
Yeah!

Praise and thanksgiving let everyone bring

Unto our Father for every good thing

All together joyfully sing!

25.  Sing, Sing, Sing Your Praise (Tune:  Row, Row, Row Your Boat) (2-Part Round)

Sing, sing, sing your praise
To our Lord above
For the day and for the food
And for Your lasting love.

There is someone who thinks of me, (thinks of me)
And makes me happy as can be (as can be)
A-a-and give me bread, a place to rest my head,
The joy of friends and family!
(Spoken) Thank you, Lord!

Thank you Lord, for giving us food! (Raise right fist, then put down)

Thank you Lord, for giving us friends! (Raise left fist, then put down)

For the food that we eat! (Raise right fist again)

For the friends that we meet! (Raise left fist again)

Thank you God, for every good thing.

Bum, bum, bum, bum! (Imitate pounding both fists on the table)

Thank you, thank you, thank you, Lord
For the food upon our table
Here at camp today.
Thank you, thank you, thank you, Lord
For our friends around our table
Here at camp today.

Thank you, thank you, for the fun we're having
And for the things that we are learning
We have so much joy to share around us
Here at our camp today.

Thank you Lord, on this day
For our many great blessings.
Thank you Lord, on this day
For our many great friendships.

Glory to God, may you hear our prayer
Guide us on forever.
Thank you Lord, on this day
For our blessings and friendship.

For thy gracious * blessing,
For thy wondrous word,
For thy loving kindness
We give thanks, O Lord.

The seed goes in the ground,
The seed goes in the ground,
The sun, the rain will make the grain,
The seed goes in the ground.

The grain goes to the mill,
The grain goes to the mill,
God's wind and power make the flour.
The grain goes to the mill.

The flour makes the bread,
The flour makes the bread.
From seed to bread, God keeps us fed,
That's how God's love is spread!

Today, God our father, we thank you in prayer,
And ask you to bless all the food that we share.
We ask you to keep us in your tender care.
Guide us this day, to choose the right way.
Amen.

We are thankful, we are thankful,

For our food, for our food,

And our many blessings, and our many blessings,

Thank you Lord, thank you Lord.

We thank you Father for our evening meal

For fun and friends and the happiness we feel

For blessing and guidance and love we pray

Be with us tomorrow and each new day

O dearest God above us, *
You've met all our needs;
We thank thee,
As we bow our heads to pray.

For food in a world where many walk in hunger;
For faith in a world where many walk in fear.
For friends in a world where many walk alone,
We give you humble thanks, O Lord.

We thank you Lord for daily bread,
For rain and sunny weather.
We thank you Lord for this our food,
And that we are together.

Thank you, thank you, thank you Lord,
Thank you, thank you Father,
Thank you Lord for this our food,
And that we are together.

Zip a dee do dah, Zip a dee ay,
I am grateful for God's blessings today.
I've plenty to eat, to drink and to share,
I sit at God's table and see love everywhere.

Many religions say a short prayer before a meal, in which a blessing is asked and thanks are given. In Christianity this prayer is called "Grace." Non-religious people may still want to give thanks before a big meal, such as a Thanksgiving Dinner, or may be asked to do so at a formal event. Obviously people who don't believe in a god are not giving thanks to God but they can say more than just "Bon Appétit!"

In fact, a godless grace can be very moving: it allows time for reflection and thanks focused on this world, appreciating the value of nature and acknowledging the human effort which went into bringing food, family and friends together for a meal. Nor does a secular benediction need to be explicitly atheist, or exclude anyone because of their beliefs.

Giving thanks before a meal can be just a few words spoken from the heart and finished quickly before the food gets cold! Expressing gratitude for the food and appreciation of the company is all that is needed. Or this may be an opportunity to go around the table and have each person say what they are grateful for.

Chapatti, Chapatti, Puri and rice!

Burrito, tacquito, spaghetti and spice!

Dim sum, egg foo yong,

Two all-beef patties, special sauce on a bun.

Hands across the table,

Hands across the sea,

Sharing in the banquet of the earth! Thanks!

For what we are about to receive
let us be truly thankful
…to those who planted the crops
…to those who cultivated the fields
…to those who gathered the harvest.

For what we are about to receive
let us be truly thankful
to those who prepared it and those who served it.

In this festivity let us remember too
those who have no festivity
those who cannot share this plenty
those whose lives are more affected than our own
by war, oppression and exploitation
those who are hungry, sick and cold

In sharing in this meal
let us be truly thankful
for the good things we have
for the warm hospitality
and for this good company.

41.  Adams Family Grace (Tune: Adams Family)

We've filled our plates and dishes,
With food that is nutritious,
And all that we wish is,
To thank you very much.

Da da da da (snap snap)
Da da da da (snap snap)
Da da da da, da da da da,
Da da da da (snap snap)

42.  Barbie Grace (Tune:  Barbie Girl)

I am thankful for- a chance to eat once more
It's fantastic, please quick pass it
Thanks for health and food, friends and family too
Tasty libation that is this creation

Come on eat it, You can't beat it!
Oh oh oh yeah
Come on eat it, You can't beat it!
O-o-oo o-o-oo
Come on eat it, You can't beat it!
Oh oh oh yeah
Come on eat it, You can't beat it!
Amen, amen

43.  Boom Boom Ta- Ra- Ra (Tune:  Beer Barrel Polka)

Give thanks for good friends,
We have a barrel of fun.
Give thanks for good food,
We won't waste one single crumb.

Boom Boom Ta-ra-ra!
Sing out a song of good cheer.
Now's the time for us to give thanks,
The food and friendship's here!

When it’s time for breakfast I like toast and marmalade,

Toast and marmalade, toast and marmalade.

When it’s time for breakfast I like toast and marmalade,

That’s how I start my day.

Just a cup of tea, that’s enough for me,

That’s enough for me (with milk and sugar.)

Just a cup of tea, that’s enough for me,

That’s enough for me.

I want eggs and bacon,

And a slice of good fried bread.

If you have no bacon

Then a sausage will do instead.

I thank the brown cow for the chocolate milk.

I thank the pig (oink, oink) for the bacon of the grill.

I thank the chicken for the egg and the egg for the chicken.

And the Guiders for the breakfast we’re served.

46.  Circles of Love (Tune: Old Gray Mare)

The circles of Love are common in my family,
Raining down from every tree,
Filling me with energy.
We hold hands to form a world of Harmony,
Singing the circles of Love.

For the meal we are about to eat,
for those that made it possible,
and for those with whom we are about to share it,
we are thankful.

Let us enjoy good food and good drink,
And let us thank all whose efforts have set them before us;
Let us enjoy good companionship,
And let us each one be good company to the others;
Let us enjoy ourselves, without guilt,
But let us not forget that many are less fortunate

Let us think thrice while we are gathering here for this meal.
First, let us think of the people we are with today, and make the most of the pleasure of sharing food and drink together.

Then, let us think of the people who made the food and drink and brought it to us, who serve us and wait on us, and who clear up and clean up after us.
Finally, let us think of all the people all over the world, members with us in the human family, who will not have a meal today.

50.  MMM Grace (Tune:  Linger)

MMM - I am so thankful
MMM - that we’re together
MMM - to share this food with each of you.

We're thankful, we're thankful
For friendships, for friendships
And for good food, and for good food
And hands that prepared it.

Bless the food before us now;

Bless the friends who will share it;

Bless the fields and bless the plow,

And bless the hands that prepare it.

We are thankful for the food on this table.
We are thankful for this time together.
Our thoughts go out to family and friends;
We hope that they are safe and well.

We give thanks for the plants and animals who have given themselves so that we can enjoy this meal together.
We also give thanks for our friends and family who have traveled here today.
May this meal bring us strength and health.

We receive this food in gratitude to all beings
Who have helped to bring it to our table,
And vow to respond in turn to those in need
With wisdom and compassion.

For Your many blessings
We are truly thankful
