Happy New Years!

And a great big Happy 100th Birthday to Guiding in Alberta!

Over the last 100 years, girls and women have been connected to Guiding in Alberta. There will be many events over the course of 2013 to celebrate.  On May 11, 2013, we will be celebrating in many locations across the province.  The Edmonton Area celebration will be held at Tangletrees Campsite.  I am very excited to have been asked to lead the Campfire.  This month, I would like to share our "Three Cheers for 100 Years" campfire with all of you so you can start teaching the girls the songs in preparation for the big event!

For all Edmonton Area Leaders, I will be holding a training session on Tuesday, January 15, 2013, 7:00 pm at Alberta Guide House to go over all the songs!  Please register at the office by calling 780-451-2263 or email adminsupport@guidesedmonton.ab.ca.

Being a Guide With You – Judy Barker

We'll have a good time, singing a song,

Learning new things as we travel along.

Well it's such a lot of fun being a Guide with you.

Make some good friends, try something new,

I'm doing new things I never thought I could do

And it's such a lot of fun being a Guide with you.

Being a Guide means being a friend,

Working together until the day's end,

Laughing along, singing a song, sharing a dream or two.

The future is ours, it's just round the bend.

I know I'm prepared and I've got a friend

And it's such a lot of fun being a Guide with you.

Being a Guide means lending a hand

And being a Guide means taking a stand.

Spreading goodwill all over the land.

Making our dreams come true.

I'm singing it loud, I'm singing it clear,

'Cause I've got a message I want you to hear

And it's such a lot of fun being a Guide with you

Oh yeah, being a Guide:

Well it's ever so much fun being a Guide with you.

It's a Small World – Richard M. & Richard B. Sherman

It's a world of laughter, a world of tears,

It's a world of hopes and a world of fears,

There's so much that we share,

That it's time we're aware,

It's a small world after all.

Chorus:

It's a small world after all.

It's a small world after all.

It's a small world after all.

It's a small, small world.

There is just one moon and one golden sun.

And a smile means friendship to everyone.

Though the mountains divide,

And the oceans are wide,

It's a small world after all.

It's a world of Guiding, a world of fun.

It's a world of aims, but we work as one.

There's so much that we share,

That it's time we're aware,

It's a small world after all.

You can go to China or go to Spain.

And the Guiding Handshake will be the same.

We have friends in Japan,

Mexico, Pakistan,

It's a small world after all.

How we live our lives we must each decide,

Every Spark & Brownie & Ranger, Guide.

Throughout Guiding we find,

Both in body & mind,

It's a small world after all.

As We Trek Along

Chorus:

As we trek along together,

As we trek along

Shall we sing a song together,

Shall we sing a song?

Love life, laughter and sorrow,

Who knows what comes tomorrow

Who knows and who cares,

As we trek along.

Though the way may be weary

Still our hearts will be cheery

If we sing a song,

As we trek along.

The Happy Wanderer – Friedrich W. Moller

I love to go a-wandering,

Along the mountain track

And as I go I love to sing,

My knapsack on my back

Chorus:

Fal-der-ri, Fal-der-ra,

Fal-der-ri, Fal-der-ra ra ra ra ra ra.

Fal-der-ri, fal-der-ra

(Sing the last line of the verse)

I love to wander by the stream

That dances in the sun,

So joyously it calls to me,

Come join my happy song.

I wave my hat to all I meet,

And they wave back at me.

And blackbirds call so loud and sweet

From every greenwood tree.

O may I go a-wandering

Until the day I die,

O may I always laugh and sing

Beneath God’s clear blue sky.

Walk Around – Marion Kay

Rivers that sparkle and rush along free.

Forests so tall and green;

Dressed in her finery, Canada fair,

None are as lucky as we.

Chorus:

Ah-ah-ah, walk around, look around,

Take the time to say;

“How lucky I am that I live in this land

Of Canada today.”

All kinds of people from faraway lands

Blended into one.

Customs and cultures we're willing to share

As true Canadians.

Pioneers suffered to settle this land;

The New World was its name.

Fairness and freedom they wanted for all,

Let's live up to what they claim.

Miles of highway are ours to explore

An ever-changing view;

Four different seasons we know and enjoy,

Whether rich we be or poor.

Tzena (2-Part Round) - Israel

Tzena, Tzena, Tzena, Tzena,

Can't you hear the music playing in the village square?

Tzena, Tzena, Tzena, Tzena,

Can't you hear the music playing in the village square?

Tzena, Tzena, join the celebration.

There'll be people there from every nation.

Dawn will find us dancing in the sunlight,

Dancing in the village square.

I Like the Flowers (4-Part Round)

I like the flowers, I love the daffodils,

I like the mountains, I love the rolling hills,

I like the fireside, when all the lights are low;

Boom-ti-ar-a, Boom-ti-ar-a, Boom-ti-ar-a, Boom.

The Moose Song

A repeat after me!

There was a moose (there was a moose)
Who liked to drink a lot of juice (who liked to drink a lot of juice)
There was a moose (there was a moose)
Who liked to drink a lot of juice (who liked to drink a lot of juice)

Chorus:

Singing way-oh, way oh (singing way-oh, way-oh)

Way-oh, way-oh, way-oh, way-oh (way-oh, way-oh, way-oh, way-oh)

Way oh, way oh (way oh, way oh)

Way-oh, way-oh, way-oh, way-oh (way-oh, way-oh, way-oh way-oh)

The moose's name was Fred.
He liked to drink his juice in bed.

He drank his juice with care,
But he spilled some in his hair.

Now he’s a sticky moose.
A moose covered in juice.

All his hair went stiff.

So he combed it in a quiff.

His friends began to laugh.
So he had to take a bath.

As the water went down,
Fred the moose began to drown.

Chorus:

Singing glug-glug-glug-glug

Now let's all count to five.
Fred the moose is back alive.

Beaver Song

Beaver 1, Beaver all,

Let's all do the Beaver Call.

Ch ch ch, ch ch ch, ch ch ch, ch ch ch

(hold hands, limp-wristed, in front of your chest)

Beaver 2, Beaver 3,

Let’s all climb the beaver tree.

Ch ch ch, ch ch ch, ch ch ch, ch ch ch

(pretend to be climbing up the beaver tree)

Beaver 4, Beaver 5,

Let's all do the beaver jive.

Ch ch ch, ch ch ch, ch ch ch, ch ch ch

(hold hands at shoulder height, index fingers pointing up)

Beaver 6, Beaver 7,

Let’s all go to Beaver Heaven.

Ch ch ch, ch ch ch, ch ch ch, ch ch ch

(hook your thumbs in your armpits to form wings)

Beaver 8, Beaver 9,

STOP!! It's Beaver time.

Ch ch ch, ch ch ch, ch ch ch, ch ch ch

(funky dancing, spin around in circles)

The Bear Song

A repeat after me story!

The other day (The other day)

I met a bear (I met a bear)

Up in the woods (Up in the woods)

Away up there (Away up there)

The other day I met a bear

Up in the woods away up there.

He looked at me

I looked at him

He sized up me

I sized up him

He looked at me I looked at him

He sized up me I sized up him.

He said to me

Why don’t you run

I see you ain’t

Got any gun

He said to me why don’t you run

I see you ain’t got any gun

And so I ran

Away from there

But right behind

Me came that bear

And so I ran away from there

But right behind me came that bear

Ahead of me

There was a tree

A great big tree

O Lordy me

Ahead of me there was a tree

A great big tree O Lordy me

The nearest branch

Was ten feet up

I’d have to jump

And trust to luck

The nearest branch was ten feet up

I’d have to jump and trust to luck

And so I jumped

Into the air

But I missed that branch

Away up there

And so I jumped into the air

But I missed that branch away up there

Now don’t you fret

Now don’t you frown

‘Cause I caught that branch

On the way back down

Now don’t you fret now don’t you frown

‘Cause I caught that branch on the way back down

That’s all there is

There ain’t no more

Unless I meet

That bear once more

That’s all there is there ain’t no more

Unless I meet that bear once more

Wadlee Atcha

Wadlee Atcha, Wadlee Atcha,

Doodly Doo, Doodly Doo,

Wadlee Atcha, Wadlee Atcha

Doodly Doo, Doodly Doo,

It’s a simple little song there’s not much to it,

All you gotta do is doodly doo it.

I like the rest but the part I like best is doodly doodly doo.

Wadlee

Slap your knees

Atcha

Clap hands

Wadlee

Palms down, hands in front of body, pass right hand over left hand

Atcha

Palms down, hands in front of body, pass left hand over right hand

Doodly

Wipe left eyebrow with left hand

Doo

Wipe right eyebrow with right hand

Doodly

Snap fingers of left hand

Doo

Snap fingers of right hand

It’s a simple

Slap your knees

Little song

Clap hands

There’s not

Palms down, hands in front of body, pass right hand over left hand

Much to it

Palms down, hands in front of body, pass left hand over right hand

All you

Wipe left eyebrow with left hand

Gotta do

Wipe right eyebrow with right hand

Is doodly

Snap fingers of left hand

Doo it

Snap fingers of right hand

I like

Slap your knees

The rests

Clap hands

But the part

Palms down, hands in front of body, pass right hand over left hand

I like best

Palms down, hands in front of body, pass left hand over right hand

Is doodly

Wipe left eyebrow with left hand

Doodly

Wipe right eyebrow with right hand

Doo

Snap fingers of both hands

Thunderation

Thunder, thunder, thunderation

We're the Girl Guides Association

When we sing with determination

We create a sensation!

Repeat louder, etc.

Oom-pah-pah

(This is the engine warming up)

Oom-sss-sss

(This is the steam from the engine)

Oom-tiddle-dee-dee

(These are the penny whistles)

Da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da. Da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da.

(This is the organ)

(Groups are phased out in reverse order)

(Divide your group into sections; each one takes a different verse. Imagine you're building up the sounds of one of those old-fashion steam driven carousels!)

Prairie Rose (Tune:  Edelweiss)

Prairie Rose, Praise Rose

Every morning you greet us.

Pink and white lovely sight

You look happy to greet us.

Here in Alberta you grow so free

Lining fields and highways

Prairie Rose, Prairie Rose

Bless Alberta forever!

On My Honor – Cindy Dasch

Chorus:

On my honor, I will try;

There's a duty to be done, and I say "Aye."

There's a reason here for a reason above,

My honor is to try and my duty is to love.

No one needs to know my name,

If I hurt someone, then I'm to blame.

If I’ve helped someone, then I've helped me.

And that's the way that it should be.

I've tucked away a song or two;

If you're feeling low, there's one for you.

If you need a friend, then I will come.

There's plenty more where I’ve come from.

Come with me where a fire burns bright,

We can even see better by its own light;

We can find more meaning in a campfire glow

Than we’ve ever found in a year or so.

We've a promise to always keep,

And sing "Day is Done" before we sleep.

We’re Girl Guides together, and when we're gone,

We'll still be a-trying and a-singing this song.

The Images of Guiding – Myra Slind

When I think back to days gone by, my heart plays a merry tune

Of dancing ‘round the toadstool ring and campfire nights in June.

Chorus:

The images of Guiding are precious, clear and strong.

I keep them ever close to me, carried in a song.

There are time that I remember well from Guiding days and yet

I know no matter what I do, I never will forget.

On my honor and my promise true, I go from day to day,

I do the best that I can do; my Guiding leads the way.

Evryone Knows It

Ev’ryone knows it, but how can you show it,

That love is a wonderful thing.

Try to believe it, and then you will live it

And see what the future will bring.

Chorus:

A-a-a-a-a-a-ah.

Ev’ryone knows it, but how can you show it

That love is a wonderful thing.

Laughter or crying, there's no use denying

That love holds each life in its hands.

So, do what you can to be living in harmony,

Meeting what love may demand.

You've got a lot of it, so you must share it,

Proving that love isn't cold.

Give it to everyone, don't miss out anyone.

They'll give it back threefold.

This Little Guiding Light of Mine

This little Guiding light of mine,

I'm going to let it shine,

This little Guiding light of mine,

I'm going to let it shine,

This little Guiding light of mine,

I'm going to let it shine,

Let it shine, all the time, let it shine.

Don’t you pouf my little light out,

I’m going to let it shine,

Don’t you pouf my little light out,

I’m going to let it shine,

Don’t you pouf my little light out,

I’m going to let it shine,

Let it shine, all the time, let it shine

Take my little light round the block,

I’m going to let it shine,

Take my little light round the block,

I’m going to let it shine,

Take my little light round the block,

I’m going to let it shine,

Let it shine, all the time, let it shine

Hide it under a bushel? Oh, no,

I'm going to let it shine

Hide it under a bushel? Oh, no,

I'm going to let it shine

Hide it under a bushel? Oh, no,

I'm going to let it shine

Let it shine, all the time, let it shine

Don’t you pouf my little light out,

I’m going to let it shine,

Take my little light round the block,

I’m going to let it shine,

Hide it under a bushel?  Oh, no,

I’m going to let it shine,

Let it shine, all the time, let it shine.

He’s Got the Whole World

He’s got the whole world in his hands,

He’s got the whole round world in his hands,

He’s got the whole world in his hands,

He’s got the whole world in his hands.

He’s got the wind and the rain in his hands,

He’s got the sun and the moon in his hands,

He’s got the wind and the rain in his hands,

He’s got the whole world in his hands.

He’s got the tiny little baby in his hands,

He’s got the tiny little baby in his hands,

He’s got the tiny little baby in his hands,

He’s got the whole world in his hands.

He’s got you and me sister in his hands,

He’s got you and me brother in his hands,

He’s got you and me sister in his hands,

He’s got the whole world in his hands.

He’s got everybody here in his hands,

He’s got everybody here in his hands,

He’s got everybody here in his hands,

He’s go the whole world in his hands.

Spark Closing - I Promise to Share and Be a Friend – Jaen Wanamaker

I promise to share and be a friend.
By showing we care it's love we send.
Tho' the world is so wide
with love deep inside,
it's easy to be a friend, a friend!

Brownie Closing

O hear us now,

Your.children call.

Grant to us peace,

And bless us all.

Softly Falls the Light of Day

Softly falls the light of day

As our campfire fades away

Silently each Guide should ask

Have I done my daily task?

Have I kept my honor bright?

Can I guiltless sleep tonight?

Have I done and have I dared

Everything to be prepared?

Daytime Taps – Lady Baden-Powell

Thanks and praise, for our days,
‘Neath the sun, ‘neath the stars, ‘neath the sky.

As we go, this we know – God is nigh.
