Hello everyone,

September is coming quickly, thus the reason for me posting the September Feature Campfire early - Getting to Know You!

Music can lift our spirits and it can make us sing for joy. It can rock the ages and move the masses. Yes, music touches us all in some special way and its effects in the unit and classroom are no less grand. Music can be used in a variety of ways and across the many topic areas we cover in the Guiding/Scouting and classroom programs.

For leaders and teachers who are creative, there is no end to the possibilities for music.  Music can be used in all areas of our programs to reinforce concepts.  To improve negative behaviors and work effort, use of music as a positive reinforcer really is effective.

Studies have shown that music increases concentration, improves memory skills, increases motivation for learning, reduces stress and frustration and makes the environment fun. Music helps girls remain on-task, show better work production and stay motivated. The opportunities to increase learning and motivation through music are within reach and with practice, become a commonplace application in the unit and classroom environment.  Leaders and teachers who try music in their programs continually find more and better ways to enjoy its benefits and discover their kids can enjoy learning and play once again!

Stay tuned monthly for my Feature Campfires.  I hope they will help you explore ideas / themes (songs, singing games, skits, stories, action songs, etc.) that you can introduce in your unit and classroom activities.

Here's wishing you all a very successful kick-off to your Guiding/Scouting and teaching year.

Take Care

New Friend – Poem by Marie Fleming

A new friend, a true friend

A cheers-me-when-I’m blue friend

A sunny-day-hurray friend

A come-over-and-play friend

A nice-in-every-way friend

A new friend, a true friend

A turns-the-gray-skies- blue friend

A talk-and-talk-non-stop friend

A giggle-till-we-drop friend

A none-can-ever-top friend

A new friend, a true friend

A happy-I-met-you friend

Grab Another Hand David Graham

Grab another hand; grab a hand next to ya,

Grab another hand and sing this song.

Grab another hand; grab a hand next to ya,

Grab another hand and sing, sing this song.

Chorus:

Al-la, la, al, la, la la, le-lu-ya,

Al-la, la, la, la, la, la le-lu,

Al-la, la, la, la, la, la-le-lu-ya,

Al-la, la, la, la, la, la, Al-le-lu-ya.

Raise another hand; raise a hand next to ya,

Raise another hand and sing, sing this song.

It's a Small WorldRichard M. & Richard B. Sherman

It's a world of laughter, a world of tears

It's a world of hopes and a world of fears

There's so much that we share

That it's time we're aware

It's a small world after all.

Chorus:

It's a small world after all

It's a small world after all

It's a small world after all

It's a small, small world

There is just one moon and one golden sun

And a smile means friendship to everyone

Though the mountains divide

And the oceans are wide

It's a small world after all.

It's a world of Guiding, a world of fun

It's a world of aims, but we work as one

There's so much that we share

That it's time we're aware

It's a small world after all.

You can go to China or go to Spain

And the Guiding Handshake will be the same

We have friends in Japan,

Mexico, Pakistan,

It's a small world after all.

How we live our lives we must each decide,

Every Guide & Ranger & Brownie, Guide

Throughout Guiding we find,

Both in body & mind

It's a small world after all.

Getting to Know You – Oscar Hammerstein

Getting to know you,
Getting to know all about you.
Getting to like you,
Getting to hope you'll like me.

Getting to know you,
Putting it my way,
But nicely,
You are precisely,
My cup of tea.

Getting to know you,
Getting to know all about you.
Getting to like you,
Getting to hope you'll like me.

Getting to know you,
Putting it my way,
But nicely,
You are precisely,
My cup of tea.

Getting to know you,
Getting to feel free and easy
When I am with you,
Getting to know what to say

Haven't you noticed
Suddenly I'm bright and breezy?
Because of all the beauty and new
Things I'm learning about you
Day by day.

Getting to know you,
Getting to feel free and easy
When I am with you,
Getting to know what to say

Haven't you noticed
Suddenly I'm bright and breezy?
Because of all the beautiful and new
Things I'm learning about you
Day... by... day.

Make New Friends (2-Part Round)

Make new friends but keep the old,

One is silver and the other gold.

A circle's round, it has no end,

That's how long I want to be your friend.

One Bottle of Pop (3-Part Round)

One bottle of pop, two bottles of pop,

Three bottles of pop, four bottles of pop,

Five bottles of pop, six bottles of pop,

Seven bottles of pop, POP!

Fish and chips and vinegar,

Vinegar, vinegar,

Fish and chips and vinegar,

Pepper, pepper, pepper salt!

Don't throw your junk in my backyard,

My backyard, my backyard,

Don't throw your junk in my backyard,

My backyard's full!

O Be Joyful (3-Part Song)Natalie Sleeth

O be joyful; O be jubilant,

Put your sorrows far away,

Come rejoice and sing together this happy day.

O be joyful;

O be happy on this day.

O be joyful, O be joyful,

O be joyful on this happy day.

The Window (The Second-Story Window)

The window, the window

The second-story window

If you don't know a nursery rhyme

We'll throw you out the window!

Mary had a little lamb; its fleece was white as snow

And everywhere that Mary went -

She threw it out the window!

The window, the window...

(Repeat with other nursery rhymes until you run out! You can also divide your singing group into teams and sing this song as a competition.)

Other Verses (make up appropriate actions)

Picolo-la

Trumpet-ta

Piano-la

I Like

This is game of likes and dislikes. The leader starts off by saying something like "I like eggs but not chickens" or "I like puddles but not rain" or "I like noodles but not soup". The girls then try it out, with their own pair of likes and dislikes.

SECRET: All the "likes" have double letters in them, e.g., puddle, egg, noodle, while the "dislikes" don't!

If I Were Not a Girl Guide

Chorus:

If I were not a Girl Guide, something else I'd like to be

(clap, stamp!)

If I were not a Girl Guide...

Archer:

An Archer I would be!

Shoot the bow, the mighty mighty bow I said,

Shoot, the bow, the mighty mighty bow!

(Everyone sings chorus again)

Birdwatcher:

A Birdwatcher I would be!

There's a lark and there's a lark and there's another lark (UGH!)

There's a lark and there's a lark and there's another lark (UGH!)

(Once the Birdwatcher has said her line twice, the Archer joins in. Therefore the Birdwatcher says her line four times, and the Archer says her line twice. Then everyone sings the chorus again)

Farmer:

A farmer I would be!

Sow the seed, and fertilize the weeds!

Sow the seed, and fertilize the weeds!

(Once the Farmer has said her line twice, the Birdwatcher joins in... after the Birdwatcher has said her line twice, the Archer joins in... get the picture? This continues with each verse until you have seven or eight people all saying/singing different things at the same time!) (Everyone sings the chorus again)

Hippie:
A hippie I would be!

Hey man, cool man, far out, WOW!

Hey man, cool man, far out, WOW!

(Farmer joins in, then Birdwatcher, then Archer, then everyone sings the chorus)

Leader:

A Leader I would be!

Where's your socks and where's your shoes and don't forget your hat!

Where's your socks and where's your shoes and don't forget your hat!

(Hippie joins in, then Farmer, Birdwatcher and Archer, then everyone sings the chorus again)

Boy Scout:

A Boy Scout I would be!

EEW! A bug! Squish it in the rug!

EEW! A bug! Squish it in the rug!!

(Leader joins in, then Hippie, Farmer, Birdwatcher, Archer, then everyone sings the chorus one last time!!)

Everyone Knows It

Everyone knows it, but how can you show it

That love is a wonderful thing.

Try to believe it, and then you will live it

And see what the future will bring.

Chorus:

A-a-a-a-a-a-ah.

Everyone knows it, but how can you show it

That love is a wonderful thing.

Laughter or crying, there's no use denying

That love holds each life in its hands.

So, do what you can to be living in harmony,

Meeting what love may demand.

You've got a lot of it, so you must share it,

Proving that love isn't cold.

Give it to everyone, don't miss out anyone.

They'll give it back threefold.

Pass It OnKurt Kaiser

It only takes a spark to get a fire going

And soon all those around can warm up to its glowing

That's how it is with Guiding

Once you've experienced it

You spread your joy to everyone

You want to pass it on.

What a wondrous time is spring when all the trees are budding

The birds begin to sing, the flowers start their blooming

That's how it is with Guiding

Once you've experienced it

You want to sing, it's fresh like spring

You want to pass it on.

I wish for you my friend, this happiness that I've found

You can come join in, it matters not where you're bound

I'll shout it from the mountain tops

I want the world to know

The joy of friends has come to me

I want to pass it on.

Night is falling,

Stars are bright.

Have I said my last good-night?

Lord above look down on me

And help me through the night.

Thank you for a lovely day.

Thank you for showing me the way.

Thank you for all you have given me,

Good-night, O Lord, good-night.

Taps

Day is done

Gone the sun

From the lake,

From the hills,

From the sky,

All is well

Safely rest

God is nigh.
