We’ve all heard the saying, “Active Kids, Healthy Kids.”  But we all know that it is not that easy.  Being healthy, staying healthy, takes a lot of work.  And you are never too young or old to start learning or changing your bad habits to get on the path to living a full, active and healthy life.

This month’s campfire “Live a Healthy Life – Food, Nutrition and Exercise” will help you add an element of fun when discussing this topic in your Units or Classrooms.  This is life!  This is not a one-time topic for discussion.  It’s through our examples as leaders and teachers that our future generations will know how to live and stay healthy!

Here are some links to some great resources to help you plan your programs around this topic.

“There are five food groups on the food pyramid

That I should choose from each day

Vegetables, grain, meat, dairy and fruit

Will help my body work and play

Each food group supplies needed nutrients

To help my body to grow/

The fats and oils used sparingly,

That’s something that I should know.

Vitamins and minerals are part of the plan

That keeps me healthy and strong.

I will choose each day to do all that

I can to help my body grow real strong.

Calories within my food becomes energy.

Energy my body will need,

To help me think, work and exercise.

They will help me to succeed.

Healthy body builders will choose carefully

A healthy balance each day.

Eating foods from each category

Will help me live a healthy way.”

Chapatti, Chapatti,

Puri and rice!

Burrito, taquito, spaghetti and spice!

Dim sum, egg foo yong.

Two all-beef patties,

Special sauce on a bun,

Hands held around the campfire,

Hands across the sea,

Sharing in this banquet of the earth!

I Like to Eat Apples and Bananas

I like to eat, eat, eat,
Apples and bananas
I like to eat, eat, eat,
Apples and bananas.

Now change the vowel sounds to A, E, I, O, and U in each verse:.

Ay lake tay ate, ate, ate,
ay-pulls aynd bay-nay-nays
Ay lake tay ate, ate, ate,
ay-pulls aynd bay-nay-nays.

E - Ee leek tee eet - eeples eend beeneenees
I - Eye like ty ite - iples eye-nd bi-ni-nis
O - Oh loke toe oat - oh-ples oh-nd bononos
U - Ooh luke too oot - ooples oond boonoonoos.

On Top of Spaghetti

On top of spaghetti all covered with cheese

I lost my poor meatball when somebody sneezed

It rolled off the table and onto the floor

And then my poor meatball rolled out of the door

It rolled into the garden and under a bush

And then my poor meatball was nothing but mush

The mush was as tasty as tasty could be

Then early next summer it grew into a tree

The tree was all covered with beautiful moss

It grew lovely meatballs with tomato sauce

So next time you eat s'getti all covered with cheese

Hang onto your meatball and don't ever sneeze!

If All of the Raindrops

If all of the raindrops were lemon drops and gum drops,

Oh, what a world this would be!

I'd stand outside with my mouth open wide, goin'

Ah, ah ah ah, ah ah ah, ah ah ah,

If all of the raindrops were lemon drops and gum drops,

Oh, what a world this would be!

If all of the moonbeams, were popsicles and ice cream

Oh, what a world this would be!

I'd stand outside with my mouth open wide, goin'

Ah, ah ah ah, ah ah ah, ah ah ah,

If all of the moonbeams, were popsicles and ice cream

Oh, what a world this would be!

If all If all of the snowflakes were lemon tarts and cupcakes

Oh, what a world this would be!

I'd stand outside with my mouth open wide, goin'

Ah, ah ah ah, ah ah ah, ah ah ah,

If all of the snowflakes were lemon tarts and cupcakes

Oh, what a world this would be!

YMCA – Tune:  “YMCA” by The Village People

Young girl, get your butt off that chair

I said young girl, go and get some fresh air

I said young girl, just put down that fried dough

Get up, get out, this you should know

Young girl, you just stop sitting there

With that blank and boring long stare

I said young girl, go and get on your suit

You’re about to have some great fun

It’s fun to swim at the YMCA

It’s fun to swim at the YMCA

Young girl, young girl are you listening to me,

Put on that suit, swim a lap and be free

At the YMCA, yes, at the YMCA,

Stay fit and be strong,

Live healthy all life long!

SWIM!

Are You Eating – Tune:  “Are You Sleeping” (4-Part Round)

Are you eating, are you eating,

Healthy foods, healthy foods?

For your body needs them, for your body needs them

Every day, every day.

Give Us Cheese – Tune:  “Three Blind Mice” (2-Part Round)

Cheese, cheese, cheese, we love cheese,

Please, please, please, give us cheese,

We like white cheese, oh yes we do,

Orange cheese tastes wonderful too,

Yellow cheese is for me and you,

Oh, give use cheese!  Please!

Growing Song – Tune:  “Are You Sleeping” (4-Part Round)

We need food and we need water

We need sleep, lots of sleep

To help our bodies grow

From our heads down to our toes

Grow, grow, grow

Grow, grow, grow

I’m a Believer – Tune:  “I’m a Believer” by The Monkees

When I was young I stayed away from vegetables

They were meant for someone else, but not for me

Veggies couldn’t taste good, that’s the way it seemed

Whether they were stir fried, raw or steamed

But then I had a taste, now I’m a believer

Didn’t leave a trace of greens on my plate

I was wrong—ooh, I’m a believer

A veggie eater from now on

Chicken Lips and Lizard Hips

Oh, when I was a little kid I never liked to eat,
Mama'd put things on my plate, I'd dump them on her feet,
But then one day she made this soup, I ate it all in bed,
I asked her what she put in it, and this is what she said:

Chorus:

"Chicken lips and lizard hips and alligator eyes.
Monkey legs and buzzard eggs and salamander thighs.
Rabbit ears and camel rears and tasty toe-nail pies.
Stir them all together, it's Mama's Soup Surprise!"

I went into the bathroom and stood beside the sink,
I said, "I'm feeling slightly ill, I think I'd like a drink."
Mama said "I've just the thing, I'll get it in a wink,
it’s full of lots of protein, and vitamins I think."

Inch by Inch – David Mallett

Chorus:

Inch by inch, row by row

Gonna make this garden grow

All it takes is a rake and a hoe

And a piece of fertile ground

Inch by inch, row by row

Someone bless these seeds I sow

Someone warm them from below

'Til the rain comes tumbling down

Pulling weeds and pickin' stones
Man is made from dreams and bones
Feel the need to grow my own
'Cause the time is close at hand
Grain for grain, sun and rain
Find my way in nature's chain
To my body and my brain
To the music from the land

Plant your rows straight and long
Thicker than with pray'r and song
Mother Earth will make you strong
If you give her love and care
Old crow watchin' hungrily
From his perch in yonder tree
In my garden I'm as free
As that feathered thief up there

World Hunger Grace

For food in a world where many walk in hunger;
For faith in a world where many walk in fear.
For friends in a world where many walk alone,
We give you humble thanks, O Lord.

Today - Tune:  “Today”

Today, God our Father, we thank you in prayer,
And thank you for blessing all the food that we shared.
We ask you to keep us in your tender care.
Thanks for guiding us this day, to choose the right way.
Amen.

Taps

Day is done,

Gone the sun,

From the lake,

From the hill,

From the stars.

All is well,

Safely rests,

God is nigh.

An apple a day, keeps the doctor away!
